BAE 146 Flight Control Study

Challenge

An adjustable foot pedal mechanism was causing issues in certain parts of its motion at specific adjustment configurations. A study of the mechanism was requested by the customer and recommendations for the resolution of any issues found.

Solution

CAD modelling was used to provide a geometrically accurate model of the mechanism. This was then analyzed using the ADAMS software at various adjustment configurations. From this analysis it was possible to make recommendations for design modifications to render the pedal mechanism 'safe' in all configurations.

Value

The analysis highlighted material in the design which, whilst not necessary to support loads, was obstructing the pedal travel in certain configurations. In performing a complete study of this mechanism, it was possible to ensure that a locking scenario would not occur which would render the aircraft unsafe in service.

My Role

Lead consultant on this Flight Control study, performing the mechanism analysis and making recommendations to the customer on the changes necessary to render the design 'safe' in service.
